Digitalising the health information system
- Client: Région Médicale de Saint-Louis
- Sector: Healthcare
- Country: Senegal
To support its digital transformation, the Saint-Louis Medical Region set out to modernise its health information management system, so as to centralise health data, make it more reliable and put it to better use.
The challenge
The Saint-Louis Medical Region coordinates public healthcare across the region, from health districts down to health centres and health posts. Managing public health there relies on the information these facilities report as they work: care delivered, programme monitoring, available resources.
To support its digital transformation, the Medical Region set out to modernise its health information management system. The project carried several challenges:
- centralising data produced by many facilities spread across the region;
- making data collection more reliable and reducing re-keying;
- getting consolidated indicators faster;
- putting information to better use when planning and monitoring health actions;
- keeping health data confidential.
Our approach
The Saint-Louis Medical Region worked with alua | COGES Group, the software publisher of COGES Group. Together, the teams took a step-by-step approach built on:
- an analysis of the existing information flows, from healthcare facilities up to the region;
- digital data collection, with forms designed for conditions on the ground;
- a centralised, secure database, with access defined by each person’s role;
- dashboards to follow key indicators;
- user training, at regional level as well as in the districts.
Results
The Saint-Louis Medical Region now has:
- a centralised health information system for the whole region;
- data collected more reliably and available sooner;
- consolidated indicators to support planning and monitoring;
- teams trained to run their own tools.
Looking ahead
This digital foundation opens the way to new uses: extending monitoring to other health programmes, exchanging data more easily with national systems, and basing decisions on up-to-date information.
